Green Car Innovation Fund
- call for grant applications
Applications are now being accepted for the Australian Government's Green Car Innovation Fund.
Merit-based grants from $100,000 are available for Australian technology projects that significantly reduce fuel consumption and/or greenhouse gas emissions of passenger motor vehicles.
With $1.3 billion in funding over the next 10 years, the government will provide one dollar of funding (25 per cent) to three dollars from the applicant.
The grants are available for projects that either reduce the fuel consumption of passenger motor vehicles, cut their greenhouse gas emissions, or both.
Applicants need to show that the projects will help the research, development and commercialisation of these new green technologies.
Stream A of the program is open to motor vehicle producers for projects of $5 million or more.
Stream B is open to Australian companies, individuals or other entities, and this includes collaborations across sectors such as the car component and computer hardware industries. Grants start at $100,000.
The car industry has seen a wide range of innovations in the past few years, and they show the kind of projects that could be funded under this grant. These include:
• nanotechnology
• changes to steering, clutch and engine performance
• aerodynamic improvements
• new fuel injection methods
• using a "leaner" fuel mix, and
• using catalysts to change pollutants into cleaner by-products.
The initiatives can be at various stages of development covering research and development, proof-of-concept, early stage commercialisation and pre-production activities carried out Australia.
